My Theory of Writing

Grocery shopping lists, notes we take, and texts we send to friends. These are all examples of writing that we might do on a daily basis. Whether we realize it or not, the writing we do matters significantly. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to make the reality of our thoughts. Most people can either think of writing as a task or a hobby but I like to think of it as a necessity. Writing can have as much as an impact as our words do and that is my theory of writing. The creativity, imagination, and importance of our writing is something that is powerful and should be used by everyone. Writing lets you express yourself, maybe even better than your words can and it can make you feel free. Having the freedom to write whatever you want is a powerful feeling and can also help a lot of people express their own thoughts.

Coming into this class I wasn’t that eager to write. Highschool essays and assignments were bland to me; It was the same thing every year. So coming into a freshman college composition class, I thought it would be the same thing. Then when we got the first assignment I was sure it was going to be like that. It wasn’t the worst essay i’ve ever had to write but I wanted to do something different. Moving onto our most recent assignments, my thought process about the class and my theory of writing in general shifted. As each piece was assigned I started realizing it wasn’t like high school at all. The freedom was definitely the biggest part of it. We got to choose what to write about; That’s what was different. In high school I didn’t enjoy writing that much because I was forced to talk about a certain topic. “I personally like writing poems because I have the freedom to write in any way I want and use the language to convey my message. I think by writing a poem I’ll be able to reach out to more of my audience.” In the rhetorical analysis of the composition in two genres, I mentioned this because of my changed perspective on writing. Being able to freely write made me enjoy and also convey my message in a better way.

Definitely, the thing that has influenced and contributed to my theory of writing the most was the composition in two genres assignment. It was the first time in a while where I had fun composing a piece as an assignment. The poem I wrote was all freestyle. I didn’t revise it much because I wanted it to stay authentic. It might not be perfect but thats what makes it perfect to me. It captures the overall theme of my topic and you can see I meant everything I wrote. So to me, that poem means a lot due to the craft it took and the thought behind it. Due to this, my theory of writing shifted from thinking writing was a chore to understanding the importance of it and why everyone should do it. “It’s our turn to lend a helping hand/Planting more trees is a start/Then we can plan out how to use the land/But the most effective solution that can be grand/Is coming together to take a stand”, these four lines from my poem are the last four and are the most powerful to me because of the message they hold. My poem was the assignment I had the most fun on.

The relationship between my theory of writing and how I create knowledge is the process it takes. Writing is expressive and can take a process in order to get something you’re satisfied with. This also applies to creating knowledge because it can take a process before you acquire the knowledge that’ll forever be stuck with you. In my Inquiry-Based essay, I had to do extensive research on my topic. Of course, going in I knew something about it but other things I had no clue about. “As forests keep being cleared, global warming rises due to the trees absorbing the harmful greenhouse gases.” I learned about this when I did my research if I hadn’t done this assignment I probably would’ve grazed over these details on deforestation. This is why my theory of writing applies to creating knowledge because it takes a process in order to get to what you want.

My theory of writing can be applied to any instance where one may need to write anything and everything. On assignments but also outside life experiences like personal journal entries. My theory of writing allows people to show the importance of their thoughts and words. People shouldn’t only think that writing is for school or work, although those are instances where writing may definitely be very important. Writing serves a purpose for other things as well as I previously mentioned. For me, it has helped me become more articulate in my writing. This is due to me finding ways on how I can express my thoughts better. “Deforestation has been a prevalent issue for many years. The many topics about it include the causes and effects as well as how to resolve it. Some people take an optimistic approach and have hope for the salvation of forests and wildlife around the world. Others think there really isn’t anything to be done”, this is part of my conclusion from the first assignment we had and I think it doesn’t make much sense. I definitely think my writing improved somewhat throughout these few months and that is why my theory of writing has also changed.

My theory of writing is meant to show anybody that writing is a good thing and can help you be creative and expressive. Whether it is for an assignment or for something simple such as a note to someone, writing can help you in numerous ways. There are different mediums I think people should also explore in order to find their style of writing and what they enjoy writing. Doing different genres throughout this semester helped as well for that same reason I previously stated. The reason why I write is to give my thoughts a voice and express myself vividly through my language.
